History of Homestay in Malaysia

The Malaysian Homestay Program was founded and pioneered by Dato’ Haji Sahariman Hamdan in 1995. Inspired by the idea of welcoming travellers into rural homes, Dato’ Haji Sahariman introduced a concept where visitors could stay with local families, experience real kampung life, and immerse themselves in Malaysia’s culture and traditions.

From humble beginnings with only a few pioneer villages, the movement grew into a nationwide network of certified homestays. It has become one of Asia’s most recognised models of community-based tourism, empowering rural communities to earn sustainable income while preserving their heritage, traditions, and authentic lifestyles.

Today, Malaysian homestays continue to thrive — offering travellers unique experiences that go beyond sightseeing, from eco & agro tourism to edu-tourism, culinary journeys, and cultural exchanges. It remains a proud symbol of Malaysian hospitality and the warmth of our kampung spirit.
